A sure way to feel connected and to make friends is to do something you love that supports the ministries of the church. Here are just a few ways to be part of the magic of First Church Somerville:
Help in Sunday school: Once a month or once a quarter, assist our excellent, prepared lead teachers in nursery (0-3), Godly Play I (pre-K and kindergarten), Godly Play II (grades 1-2), Flying Hedgehogs (grades 3-4), or Flying Pigs (grades 5-6) classrooms. Email one of our pastors to get involved.
Join a Coffee Klatch: Cook, shop for, serve, and clean up our fabulous coffee hour. Email one of our pastors to get involved
Visit an elder: Spend time with a shut-in who would love the company and camaraderie. Email one of our pastors to get involved.
Be a liturgist: Share your God story in front of the kindest crowd you will ever face, and inspire others with your testimony. Email one of our pastors to get involved.
Make some music: Whether you are a professional musician or are an indubitable amateur, there’s a way for you to share your gifts. Group singing on retreat, Easter Sunday orchestra, or First Church Marching Band—all are ways you can make music for God. Email our music director to get involved.
Help manage the sound: We have a fairly low-key operation -- a few mics to amplify the sound, and a podcast so folks who missed church or are part of the First Church Disapora can listen to the sermon -- but we still need a pair of hands each Sunday to manage it. Email our sound booth team to get involved.
Be a greeter or welcomer: Be the face of God for another person just walking into the building for the first time. Trainings happen about twice a year. Email Kathleen Seward to get involved.
Make food for life events: Put your cooking skills to work for someone who has just given birth to or adopted a new baby, or for those who are newly grieving. Email our Deacons to get involved.
Tend the garden: Our 500-square-foot garden provides food for our coffee hour table and pounds of fresh organic veggies for the Somerville Homeless Coalition food pantry during the growing season. Email our church farmer to get involved.
Tend the grounds: Get your vitamin D and exercise mowing the lawn in summer or shoveling the walk in winter. Email our Buildings & Gardens Team to get involved.
All-Church Work Day: Twice a year we tend to seasonal needs of the buildings and grounds, deep clean, and make light repairs to our beloved but elderly building—new friendships, lunch, and disco music are side benefits for all who attend! Email Buildings & Gardens to get involved.
Committees and teams: We have a number of more formal leadership opportunities, many of which are open to newcomers. All of our meetings except for Deacons are public, and we encourage anyone to come to witness and be part of the decision-making and visioning of our community. Our committees and teams include (star indicates you must be a formal member of FCS to serve):
Committees meet approximately every other month, and take a Sabbath month in July. Email one of our pastors to get involved. And if you'd like us to help you figure out what a good match for your gifts is among us, all you have to do is fill out our Spiritual Gifts Inventory.
