Bright and Salty

Hello Beloved!

Once during seminary I went to a Pentecostal church service.  It was the first time in my life I had actually seen the "Gifts of Spirit" take place in a Pentecostal church.  People were speaking in tongues, singing in tongues, prophesying, and being slain in the Spirit.  All of this activity and worship was coupled with the intense emotion of the congregation - joy, excitement, and ecstasy.  People were dancing in the pews, yelling and shouting, weeping, laughing, singing, and literally rolling and shaking uncontrollably in the aisles as the Spirit swept through their bodies!  Sure, I had wept in church once or twice, laughed a few more, and felt God's presence in my life but THIS, THIS was like nothing I had ever experienced before!  I remember thinking, I've got it all wrong!  This must be what being a Christian, what going to church REALLY feels like.

Have you, like I did at that Pentecostal service, ever looked around at church and felt a little jealous of the emotion, the feeling, the experience, or the faith you believe you see in others?  As the woman to the left of me and the man to right fell down on the floor seized by the Spirit and all I could do was stand there swaying to the music and clapping my hands - I felt a little inadequate.  If you've ever been there (and I think we ALL have to some degree at some time), then this service is for you.  What do we do when the feeling just won't come?  What do we do when we feel like we don't know how to BE Christians?  What do we do when we come before God and, instead of love or ecstasy, we feel pain or inadequacy?  I hope there may a Word on Sunday for these experiences in our lives.
Megan B. is our able liturgist. Molly will pray with us! During coffee hour: the Goods and Services Auction for the Casa San Jose orphans, and our brand-spankin'-new Youth Group launches. After 11am worship: Jazz Brunch with homemade Filipino food and the jazz stylings of Willie Sordillo and friends! All proceeds benefit Typhoon Haiyan rebuilding efforts.
