Advent & Christmas 2016 at First Church Somerville

Were you raised in church, and kind of miss the rituals and mood-making that happens this time of year? Were you not raised in church, and wonder what all the fuss is about? We invite you to join our progressive, warm and open community for Advent and Christmas festivities this year, as we draw closer to God in this season of Emerging by nurturing the good and holy things we dream of bringing into the world.

Every Sunday: Advent Worship with wreath candle lighting, 10am, with paid professional childcare and Sunday school at the same hour.

Life of the Beloved – An Online Advent Discussion: Every Tuesday 11/22 – 12/20, beginning at 7pm on Facebook. We’ll be discussing Henri Nouwen’s classic book Life of the Beloved: Spiritual Living in a Secular World. For more information email Rev. Jeff at

Christmas Carolling the Neighborhood: Saturday, December 3, 6:30pm. Call or email the church office ( for location!

The Advent / Christmas Cantata Worship and Brunch: Sunday, December 18, 10am worship, 11am brunch and carols. One of the high points of our year together, with bells, fabulous choral anthems, taquitos and Christmas cookies, and singing carols together at the top of our lungs.

The Longest Night Service: Wednesday, December 14, 6:45pm. A spiritual-but-not-necessarily-religious service for those who are lonely or in grief. It ends with the kindling of holy fire and hot cider outside under the stars.

Christmas Eve Services:

Christmas Eve is when we go all out - all the music, candles, and traditions ofthe season to welcome in Christmas.

Saturday, December 24, 4pm: Family Service with impromptu Pageant.

Saturday, December 24, 8pm: Service of Quiet Joy. Real Live Baby Jesus, plenty of candles, beautiful music, and starlight will remind us what it is to be a human being fully alive.

All-Ages Christmas Sunday: Sunday December 25, 10am. A low-key service for those who want to take a moment in the midst of tearing open presents to get spiritually centered. It's a come as you are Pajama Sunday, wear your footies, bring leftover pie, and worship together with your kids if you’ve got ‘em. Service will be accompanied by paino music and carols.
